Qantas New Zealand had a very short history indeed. Owned and operated by Tasman Pacific Airlines in New Zealand, Qantas gave permission to use their logo and copyrights and hence a franchisee operation was born. Using Dash 8 and Bae146 aircraft from the former Ansett New Zealand, the franchisee operation operated until Tasman Pacific went the way of many smaller airlines, and was placed into receivership. Qantas New Zealand was indeed a short lived operation but when Qantas knew of this financial position they assisted the now stranded New Zealand general public and used their own 737 aircraft in internal New Zealand flights.
On October 28 2002, Jetconnect, a wholly owned Qantas subsidiary commenced operations on domestic services in New Zealand. Jetconnect will operate 4 boeing 737-300 aircraft with possible introduction of a further 3 by the end of 2002. Jetconnect will operate its aircraft in Qantas livery without the "Spirit of Australia" caption. The airline will operate with a New Zealand AOC and have its aircraft registered in New Zealand. Qantas operations in NZ previously contracted to AWOPS will be wound up. Jetconnect will operate Ansett Worldwide Boeing 737-33a's VH-CZR, VH-CZS, VH-CZU and VH-JNE.
