What is Online flying? |
IVAO & VATSIM all exist to the same type of service...to provide real time ATC (Air Traffic Control) in a simulated environment. When you connect to the server you are able to see other aircraft, join voice communications with roger wilco and fly in a very realistic environment! Both VATSIM and IVAO are professional organisations that have different things to offer online pilots and controllers whilst operating in the SquawkBox / Pro Controller online environment. Through its members QVA has been able to forge solid and successful relationships with both services. Qantas Virtual Airways is a partner with VATSIM and has regular organised flyins with our own members.
Qantas Virtual Airways demands that all pilots observe professional courtesy when using any online service. When online pilots represent the public image of Qantas Virtual Airways and as a result should always present themselves with the etiquette and respect deserving of others also online. Conducting unbecoming of a company pilot will be reported to the CEO for appropriate disciplinary action as deemed necessary.
Below, you will find links to the VATSIM and IVAO sections of QVA Operations which will detail procedures and online events. We also provide details of which QVA pilots are flying online.

Qantas Virtual Airways online ATC Fly-Ins |
From time to time Qantas Virtual Airways will in association with either VATSIM or IVAO - or even in partnership with another VA and organise a Fly In event that is focused on Qantas Operations. Pilots who have not flown online before or do not normally fly online will be encouraged to participate in these events. These events are the only online events fully sanctioned by QVA and may be co-ordinated under the QVA title. All other online flying or events are run independently by VATSIM or IVAO Australia and pilots are free to participate in any of these events at their discretion. As these events are organised information will be provided here as well as on the Online Flying Forum. When is the NEXT FLY-IN ??? check here for details Vatsim of course have active online ATC available every day, but this is not QVA specific, but very popular nonetheless. Active online ATC is of course available outside these times on both organisations but is somewhat spasmodic as you are at the whim of logged on active controllers, who may/may not be online, but having said that, if you stick to the major trunk routes within Australia and overseas routes, you will have a good chance of full online ATC coverage for your flight at any time of day or night on both organisations. Please feel free to go to the online flying forum if you have any fly-in ideas What Are They All About? QVA Online Fly-ins endeavour to include all QVA Online Pilots into flying online. While learning many techniques used in the virtual simming world you'll also have a great time and meet other QVA Pilots. Fly-ins are organised via participants, i.e. through suggested routes which will in most circumstances cater for all type categories of pilots. Company frequency and Call signs online The QVA Company Frequency (132.65) will be used throughout these events on VATSIM. Correspondence is available through the QVA Online Flying Manager. When flying in QVA's Online Fly-ins you are requested to use the correct callsign . Your call sign would be QFAXYY (where X is your CAT level and YY is your QVA Roster number ). eg , if Mark Taylor is flying , his callsign is QFA508 (CAT5, Roster Number 08). ATC would then refer to Mark as QANTAS 508 whilst he was using that callsign. If , however , you chose to use the Aircraft Registration , eg VH-OGA , ATC will just then call you Oscar Golf Alpha.( No reference is made to a Qantas prefix). How Do I Suggest a Route for an Upcoming Fly -in?Please include any relevant information in your request, and simply pen your thoughts on our new Online forum!! Where is this all going? Via online fly -ins, QVA hopes to be able to fly around Australia as a VA under the guidance of real-time ATC (Air Traffic Control) provided by IVAO/VATSIM. Involvement from as many QVA Pilots as possible is encouraged. Its 100% free, so give it a go, but it is not compulsory for any QVA pilot.Participation To participate, if the route is covered in the normal APDLS routes, just bid for that route and disregard the timings, as we will fly at the appropriate time as displayed. If the route is not covered on a normal APDLS route, just request a charter with the aircraft type you intend to fly! If you do not receive your allocated charter prior to the fly-in, just fly your route and report to QVA Operations with all relevant information. All Online Fly-ins will be allocated and rewarded as a matter of course, but request use of the APDLS system prior to the fly-in to cut down an administrative red tape. Any Navigational route may be flown to the destination specified weekly. Maturity and co-operation with ATC and other pilots goes without saying and any breaching of these rules will be dealt with not only by QVA Management but more importantly VATSIM and IVAO and remember, you are representing not just our virtual airline but also a real airline Qantas and our country Australia. Once the fly-in is complete and you want to count your hours on the QVA roster, just report via APDLS or if necessary , email the details of the flight as per the normal QVA standard procedure. Air Traffic Controllers As ATC is fairly scarce on the Oceanic region, any person who acts as a controller for any QVA fly-in will be granted "double full hours accreditation" on their current active hours CAT level. So you don't miss out! Practice your online ATC whilst controlling during a QVA sanctioned event and get your hours fully accredited (times 2!!) within your CAT level without leaving the control tower !! Just email QVA Operations. with all details,

The Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network, known as VATSIM.net or "VATSIM" was created in 2001 by a group of individuals who came together with a goal of creating an organization which truly served the needs of the flight simulation and online air traffic control community. With an eye towards more than just providing a network of computers for users to log into, VATSIM is an online community where people can learn and, at the same time, enjoy the pastimes of flight simulation and air traffic control simulation all while making new friends from all over the world.
The International Virtual Aviation Organization (IVAO) is a dedicated, free of charge service to enthusiasts and individuals enjoying and participating in the flight simulation community. IVAO was formed to supply high quality services to its users. IVAO offers the Flight Simulation community a highly realistic flying environment by utilizing the ProController (PC) and SquawkBox (SB) software.
The Australian Division is dedicated to providing a realistic and live Air Traffic Control (ATC) environment for the Australian airspace. The Division is staffed by personnel dedicated to providing Australian-specific information such as custom sector files, approach plates, preferred routes, and professional ATC.
